  Khmer New Year Khmer New Year, also known as “Choul Chnam Thmey,” meaning entering the new year, is a national holiday hosted by Cambodians annually. It is the season when Cambodians have free time from harvesting rice and other agricultural commodities. The event is Cambodia’s largest event and lasts three days, on the 13th, 14th, or 15th of April (in a specific year, it could be on the 14th to 16th of April). Cambodian New Year is celebrated just like other Asian New Year Festivals that blend history with religious practices, emphasizing and commemorating the seniors and ancestors. History of Khmer language

The History of the Khmer Language The Khmer language has a long and fascinating history. It is an Austroasiatic language that is related to languages spoken in other parts of Southeast Asia such as Thai, Lao and Vietnamese. It has been spoken in Cambodia since at least the 7th century CE and is considered to be the official language of the country. Today Khmer is spoken by around 6.8 million people in Cambodia, and another 2.6 million in other parts of Southeast Asia. The Khmer language has been heavily influenced by Sanskrit and Pali, two ancient Indian languages. This influence is evident in the Khmer language’s writing system, which is based on the Indian Brahmi script. The Khmer language also has a rich literary tradition, with many works of literature written in the language over the centuries.
