The History of the Khmer Language
The Khmer language has a long and fascinating history. It is an Austroasiatic language that is related to languages spoken in other parts of Southeast Asia such as Thai, Lao and Vietnamese. It has been spoken in Cambodia since at least the 7th century CE and is considered to be the official language of the country. Today Khmer is spoken by around 6.8 million people in Cambodia, and another 2.6 million in other parts of Southeast Asia.
The Khmer language has been heavily influenced by Sanskrit and Pali, two ancient Indian languages. This influence is evident in the Khmer language’s writing system, which is based on the Indian Brahmi script. The Khmer language also has a rich literary tradition, with many works of literature written in the
language over the centuries.
